1. The Challenge

Giving New Meaning to Tons of Discarded Plastics

José María Rodríguez and Daniela Czajkowski are a couple of passionate environmentalists from Santa Fe, Argentina. Driven by their calling, they embarked on an extraordinary project to transform tons of plastic waste - destined for open-air landfills - into a powerful educational tool. Their mission's goal was to inspire future generations to rethink their relationship with the environment. This is how BOTITO Eco Guardian was born: an educational robot made 100% from recovered plastics, joined together with elastic cords.

The challenge of this project isn't just technical, it's cultural. Progress demands a paradigm shift in how we consume, use, and discard packaging. And this transformation requires environmental education that starts at an early age. BOTITO seeks to awaken that ecological awareness and teach children that what's considered useless can have a new purpose.

"With BOTITO, we give new meaning to everyday plastic. We prevent it from being thrown away and ending up in open-air landfills. Each toy represents an opportunity to teach that discarded materials can have a second life."

2. The Solution

Meta-Packaging That Educates Through Play

The new sustainable packaging design for retail embodies the BOTITO spirit by integrating circularity into both form and function. Inspired by a trash bin, it uses 100% recycled paper pulp, transforming discarded materials into a fully recyclable and compostable solution.

The manufacturing process includes 3D-printed molds that optimize material usage, biodegradable water-based inks, and a recyclable cardboard sleeve. Low-energy production minimizes environmental impact. The uncoated pulp finish showcases the raw material, demonstrating that sustainability can be both conscious and playful.

The result is a showcase of meta-packaging in action: the protective packaging transforms into a vehicle for an educational message about circular economy.

3. The Results

A Message for Future Generations

The BOTITO project transcends borders and generations. Designed for recycling and composting, it fits perfectly into circular systems. Since 2010, it has recovered 12.5 tons of plastic that would have ended up in open-air landfills. Educational workshops and awareness activities prevented over 100 additional tons of plastic waste.

International reach expanded from Santa Fe to Uruguay, Mexico, Colombia, and Chile. The packaging offers multiple sustainable disposal options: recycling, home and industrial composting, and creative reuse.

As recognition of the design's impact, the project was shortlisted for a 2025 Pentawards, the world's most prestigious packaging competition, in the Sustainable Design category. It is also competing to be the international community's favorite in the Pentawards People's Choice Award.

"Plastic takes 400 years to degrade. We're throwing a 400-year message forward, apologizing to our future humans. We want to show that there were people who tried to do things differently."
